One quick tip — tried and true.

Is it that easy? Just one thing?

Absolutely. It is that easy.

I have been to so many seminars on career advancement, job acquisition, leadership, mentorship, well… you get the idea. I went to these events because I was genuinely curious. I figured, these events take so much effort to plan that there has to provide some value after going through so much trouble. During my time at Savannah College of Art & Design I went to as many as my schedule allowed and learned a valuable lesson that has continuously proven true in my professional life: Almost no one shows up.

You think the industry hasn’t noticed? All have. People never show up and those who do, get all the attention for going. This lack of attendance is actually quite welcomed for the 9 lucky cats at the scene, we get exclusive access to speakers, get all the attention we desire, and a plethora of knowledge and networking connections. Once you keep going you’ll become a recognizable face and your thoughts, style and passion will be promptly recognized. So yeah, that’s the secret. Just show up.

You might be thinking… wait. It’s not that easy. What about saturated markets? What about industries where lots of people do show up? — Look beyond the surface. Find the gap. The void. Fill it. Make yourself indispensable.

Creatively show up. It is brushstroke advice, but once you start looking at it as a quest for gaps you’ll be excited to fill, it starts making a lot more sense and the results will come.
