Hey Alena! I think the big major thought leap is to stop separating a city from the other. Integration is a concept we keep struggling with as a society. We like to box everything and categorize it, when in reality, the loveliest moments in life are when intersections happen.
As an aspiring Architect, I envision the future to be healthily congested with the bifurcation between the built environment, and the non built environment. Sustainability adapted as a modus operandi, not as a buzz word for companies to sell things with green labels, and a populace that replaces cynicism with curiosity.
Some would say I am being overtly optimistic, and perhaps I am. But as long as the vision is clear more people can get on board to make it so.
